Heated Landlord-Tenant Dispute Reaches Deadly Fever-Pitch in Atlanta – Find Out How You Can De-Escalate Landlord-Tenant Disputes with the Help of an Atlanta Landlord-Tenant Lawyer

LandlordTenantDispute

Last year in the fall, news of a seriously heated and violent landlord-tenant dispute hit news headlines in Atlanta, prompting some Atlanta and Greater Metro Atlanta area landlords and tenants to wonder what they can do if they find themselves in a bitter controversy over lease issues. The landlord in the fatal landlord-tenant incident was sentenced to life in prison this last January, reigniting the timely discussion. According to local news reports, last year in September, Atlanta police were called to a home on Dove Valley Road in unincorporated Decatur, where they found a 40-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to the back of her neck. The woman’s fiancé, a 48-year-old man, told police that he and the woman “had gone to their landlord’s home to confront him about recent changes.” The two were reported to have believed that “the landlord…shut off their utilities in an attempt to force them out. [One tenant] also believed he might have been meddling with her bank account.” As the two tenants were speaking with the landlord at his home, the landlord’s son “went into the house and got a revolver. He shot [the two tenants] as he ran to his car to leave.” The 40-year-old woman was taken to the hospital for emergency medical treatment, where she passed away. The son of the landlord, who was arrested at the scene, told investigators that “the tenants were threatening him and his father.” The landlord’s son was ultimately charged and was later convicted this January for his role in the killing.

Landlord-Tenant Issues: Arguments Over a Lease that Can Take a Turn for the Worse

There is no question that although landlord-tenant issues are typically disputes over something that seems rather “cut-and dry”, like the lease agreement, they can result in dangerous – even deadly – disputes. As demonstrated by the recent case in which an Atlanta landlord’s son was convicted of killing a tenant, and one woman is dead, landlord-tenant disputes are often difficult, and emotions can run high when people feel like their rights are being violated.
